What is equity training for managers?

Equity training for managers is learning that helps people leaders see how their own decisions and their organization's systems shape who gets opportunity, and then change those decisions. In the Equity in Action approach published by CRW Diversity, it covers six elements: Awareness, Access, Advocacy, Action, Accountability, and Empowerment.

What does diversity equity and inclusion training for managers cover here?

Many programs labeled diversity equity and inclusion training for managers focus on concepts and terminology. The Equity in Action approach starts there with Awareness, then connects each element to a specific decision a manager makes and the change that follows.

How each element of the Equity in Action Model maps to a manager decision, from Equity in Action Practice.
ElementManager decisionWhat changes
AwarenessWho you think of first for workYou widen the list before choosing
AccessWho hears news and gets opportunitiesInformation and stretch roles flow openly
AdvocacyWhose work you name in talent reviewsEvery person is described with evidence
ActionHow assignments and hires are decidedCriteria are set before names
AccountabilityHow you judge your own fairnessYou review outcomes every cycle
EmpowermentWhen you ask for inputInput comes while decisions are still open

A six-week plan for equity in action training

One module per week keeps the work inside normal management time. The modules work on phones, tablets, and laptops, so managers can read them between meetings.

  1. Week 1AwarenessBefore your next assignment decision, list every person who could do the work, not just the first name that comes to mind. Then decide.
  2. Week 2AccessSend the same context-setting note about an upcoming change to your whole team at once, instead of sharing it in passing with a few people.
  3. Week 3AdvocacyIn one meeting this week, credit an idea back to the person who first raised it, by name.
  4. Week 4ActionWrite the criteria for your next assignment or promotion recommendation before you think about specific names.
  5. Week 5AccountabilityReview who received your three most visible assignments in the last six months. Write down one thing the pattern tells you.
  6. Week 6EmpowermentAt your next team meeting, ask for input on one open decision and report back by the end of the week on what you did with it.

Does equity training for managers change decisions?

What one field study found

Harvard Business School Working Knowledge reports that across over 10,000 job requisitions at a global engineering and telecommunications company, an explicit diversity training led to a 12 percent increase in the likelihood that managers chose women to interview. Women from a different country than the job location saw a 28 percent increase in shortlisting and a 41 percent increase in hiring.

Why it matters for this approach

The study measured decisions, not attitudes. That matches the Equity in Action Model's focus on Accountability: looking beyond intentions and paying attention to outcomes. Training is worth doing when it changes who gets interviewed, assigned, and promoted.

Who this approach suits

Organizations whose managers want practical, decision-level guidance; leadership teams that want a shared language for fair leadership; and executives who want manager training connected to the systems around it. It suits busy leaders, since each module is short.

When to choose something else

If you need a certified compliance course to meet a specific legal requirement, such as state-mandated harassment prevention training, choose a provider that certifies that requirement and confirm details with counsel. Equity in Action can sit alongside that training. Read the full comparison with general DEI training.

Who are these Equity in Action modules for?
The modules are written for people managers who want practical ways to lead more fairly, and for the senior executives responsible for equipping those managers. Each module focuses on decisions managers make weekly, such as assignments, feedback, and promotions, and closes with a note on what that element means at the executive and systems level.
Are the modules useful for first-time managers?
Yes. First-time managers are forming habits around assignments, feedback, and team norms, so it is a good moment to build fair practices in from the start. Each module is short, uses plain language, and ends with one exercise to try that week. Experienced managers can use the same exercises to check habits they formed years ago.
How can busy managers find time for equity work?
Equity work fits inside decisions managers already make, so it rarely needs a separate block of time. A Gartner survey of 2,947 employees and managers, reported by Braintrust in 2026, found 47% of managers say more is expected of them than a year ago. That is why each module focuses on one small change to an existing decision.
Is this inclusive leadership training?
The modules cover much of what people mean by inclusive leadership training, such as advocating for overlooked talent and creating conditions where people use their voices. The Equity in Action Model goes further by asking leaders to examine organizational systems and outcomes, not only individual behavior. Live workshops are available through CRW Diversity.
How much does equity training for managers cost?
The practice modules on this site are free to read. CRW Diversity does not publish prices for executive advisory, workshops, speaking, or the Equity in Action for Managers learning experience. Costs for this kind of work generally depend on scope, audience size, and format. To get specifics, describe your needs through the contact form on crwdiversity.com.
Do these modules meet compliance training requirements?
The modules on this site are practical leadership lessons, not a compliance certification. If your organization must meet a specific legal training requirement, such as state-mandated harassment prevention training, confirm requirements with your counsel and choose a provider that certifies that requirement. Equity in Action can complement compliance training.
What if managers push back on equity training?
Pushback often comes from training that feels abstract or accusatory. The Equity in Action Model is built around everyday decisions managers already make, such as assigning work, giving feedback, and nominating talent, so the conversation stays practical. Starting with one small change, rather than a sweeping mandate, tends to make the work feel doable.
What should I look for in a leadership development program for my company?
Look for a program that connects to real decisions your leaders make, fits their available time, and addresses the systems around them, not only individual skills. Ask who designed it and what operating experience they bring. Equity in Action programs from CRW Diversity are designed around daily decisions and built on nearly four decades of HR and leadership experience.
